Whacky

To use characters out of the ordinary, I’ve known forever to use the ALT key combinations, like alt-130 or alt-155, which I often mix up as to which is which, and alt-248.

For some reason these no longer work.  For some reason the ALT combinations go way above 255.  ô is Alt-500, for instance.  130 is ‚ and 155 is › and 248 is ø now.  It is almost as if it’s a Unicode set now.

Update:

Especially since the old combinations still work at a command prompt (in DOS), but as far as I can see, nowhere in Windows, a recent development that must have come from an updated, shared DLL or something.

  1. Blame us foreign language people!  smile They had to create new ALT codes so we could actually write in our own languages! Really, REALLY slows down typing speed, but at least it works on all machines!
