Verbal Girl

Valerie is way more verbal than Sadie was.  Or to put it more accurately, she is focused entirely on English, and hasn’t detoured into inventing her own language first.

How verbal is she?

Her latest new word is “computer.” Even if it does sound more like kah-pew-ah.

She also says nose, mouth, coffee (which comes out “caw"), bath, mom, dad, something that is intended to be “eye” but bears no resemblence, yes, no, something that’s intended to be “thank you” but is only clear from context, and probably several I can’t recall.  Like car, for instance, he adds as an afterthought.

Sadie says basically everything now, but it was a long haul.  The key thing is she has long understood a massive vocabulary, which is why she comes out with such unexpected sentences when she chooses.  She also has a crazy memory.  We never have cake.  She had cake for her birthday, twice, and I am not sure she’s had any since.  Perhaps I’m forgetting.  Anyway, last night we mentioned cake in her hearing and she started exclaiming “cake, cake!” and went to the kitchen, expecting to be served cake.

The cutest thing is the way Sadie says coffee and cookie: caw-yee and coo-wee respectively.  She still has trouble with middle consonants like those.

Valerie is so avid about talking, the two of them seem far closer than seventeen months apart in that regard.

  1. Hey Jay & Deb!  How’s it going?  Your girls are absolutely darling!

The most likely explanation is that Valerie is the second child - I saw this with our second.  Probaby the same explanation for the dinosaur picture as well.

As far as the advanced verbal skills, as I understand it, there comes a point of decreasing returns (based on increasing number of children) where the youngest at the time seems to take forever to learn to talk because all they have to do is grunt or point and one of their siblings is there to take care of it.  We never reached that point, only having three, but my friend with 9 kids started noticing that at about #6.

I’m starting (slowly) to blog again at Midwest Pundits - hope to see you two around the comments box!
