TV Tonight (mildly spoilerish)

Here I am geeking out when I could be writing about the evening’s TV.  Or checking out the reaction on the Heroes newsgroup, where I checked out spoilers beforehand.

First, Chuck.  Woohoo!  Awesome show.  We were hooked pretty much instantly.  Certain of the writing and humor and camera work right up front gave away an understanding of the type of person Chuck was supposed to be.  I say camera work because they showed the girl he was talking with at the party in the “in my face” way he would actually have perceived her.

It has excellent potential, despite the too obvious relationship issues to be explored - or not - between the two of them.  Plus Jayne is in it!  What could be better than the Hero of Canton, helping Chuck and Sarah save the world in your TV set each Monday night?

Next, Heroes returns with a bang.  From what I understand, the murder at the end creates an arc that stretches through the first part of the season.  They did answer questions right off; Nathan surviving, Hiro’s father not being in the past and having immortality as a power, that sort of thing.  It’s even implicit that Angela is not the one that is worse than Sylar.  Maya’s apparent power and the dampening effect of her brother are a weird one, so we’ll see where that goes.  They dismissed Parkman’s wife out of hand, but I believe we will see her again, and the baby will have powers.

Finally, Journeyman, which I was more skeptical of and with good reason.  It’s a more somber sort of storytelling, with a slower buildup that didn’t hook us fully until almost the end.  That Olivia is the other time jumper is intriguing, as are the relationships.  What he did with the toolbox was clever.  One of the points I read about Heroes is that Hiro will leave clues to Ando from the past while he remains there, so it reminded me of that.  We got into it enough to keep watching, in the end.

I hate when I can’t remember names or details off the top of my head, eliminating jokes in the bud.  I was going to make an Edith Keeler joke about the bus scene, but I could recall offhand neither the character nor actor names.

It’s so nice to have TV back.  If NBC isn’t careful, they’ll be number one.

  1. I agree, regarding Journeyman.  It was kind of a slow buildup but, I think I will tune back in next week, as it does seem to have potential.
