Trobleshooting Dead Computer, Continued
I followed up my prior troubleshooting by removing the CPU and motherboard (a nice Intel D865PERL) and putting in an older motherboard (D845WN) and CPU. I swapped back in the 40 GB drive on the idea it’s good and it’s appropriate to the resulting machine.
Then I found the RAM is wrong. The older board takes older RAM, which I don’t have kicking around here. Darn! That has to wait until I can bring home some. Except it’ll be 100, unless I can scavenge 133 out of some dead or retired machine, and last time I tried 100 in a machine that could take 133, it would only take 133. It’s not “on the cheap” if I have to go out and buy stuff. Bad enough I’ll have to for the one really new computer in progress.
In other news, I think we’ve decided to move my office in the apartment to what is now our bedroom, and vice-versa. I’ll need the space, though I was prepared to manage without it until Deb suggested the change. That room is nice and cool even without AC, and the AC we have will be more efficient in the smaller room (due date in August means presumably we will need it this summer).
Okay, back to work. Actually, I am having trouble working on what I’d like to work on. Perhaps it’s time to start a series of unentertaining posts that list software and systems I’ve used or supported, which is mainly to self-evaluate and focus my own thoughts. I’ll do an explanatory post first, so each post can link it and not feel disconnected.
