Things I want that I have no money for.

Don’t you hate that?

So I’m trying to decide what exercise equipment it is that I’m pining for.  I absolutely have to get back to getting some movement...my blood pressure is shit, my weight loss is stalling, and besides all that I just plain flat feel too much better when I do *something* every day.  Life being life, though, I’m finding this hard to accomplish.  Taking a walk with the kids is nice, but Sadie always wants to go to the playground, and while she needs the exercise, too, I’m not always feeling social enough to brave the playground full of talkative mommies. (Did anybody see ER last night?  Our mommies are not like that--in fact, the ones I’ve met have been rather nice--but I found myself groaning in sympathy anyway.  Poor Abby.) Not to mention that winter is coming, and with it the shit weather.

So I’ve been fantasizing about what piece of equipment that I can’t afford that it is that I want.  Do I go for:

A. The elliptical that’s a fabulous workout, but strenuous enough that I might be too tempted to skip it?

B. The recumbent bike?  Have to work harder at getting a workout but it’s better for those ugh sorts of days, and the no impact is nice since I do walk some of the time...or

C. The iPod, to keep me company when I decide to just suck it up and go for a real walk without the children, even when it’s 12 degrees?

Now, I’ve got the money for none of this so it’s just speculation, but what do you think?  I’m leaning toward the bike, myself, as I’d not have to leave the house to use it.  Leaving the house might be better, though...the wonders of fresh air and all, and you don’t have to talk to anyone if you’re obviously plugged in and exercising, even if it is just a walk.  I’m thinking the elliptical would make a good “you’ve been a good girl and made use of the first thing for so long that you deserve to switch it up now” gift for myself in a year or two (well, if we have the room then, anyway).

I so need to win the lottery.

  1. you could consider a total gym.  Laura had one and you could do a veriety of differn’t excersizes on it. they are not all the expensive as such stuff go.
They can also be folded down so they don’t take up a huge part of your living room.  (looks over at the ellipical)
It does give a decent workout.  Its too bad I think Laura trashed the one that she had along with a little treadmill that she hadn’t used all that much.

  2. Exercise machinery goes for 5 to 10 cents on the dollar at thrift stores. You can always find Nordic Traks in pretty good shape, and if you go to suburban Goodwills you can probably find the gear you are looking at. I’ve seen motorized treadmills cheap enough to buy for the motor and controller as an upgrade for a hobby machine tool.

  3. Probably either the bike or the elliptical in the same room at the television.  (Plus a wireless headset for the same t.v.).  This way you can watch and exercise at the same time. wink
