Shiny Thing*

I’ve started accumulating parts for my next computer.  My current one is a P3 1 GHz coming up on six years old, has already required a hard drive transplant, and is now suffering a near-full hard drive.  Relatively speaking, but that was enough to trigger “hey, the drive is almost full!” event log warnings because recycle bin, always promptly emptied, was set to the default of using 10% of the drive.  I guess 90% is a lot regardless, even if the balance will hold an awful lot of pictures.  Which, speaking of drive space, are overdue to be backed up onto the external drive…

At the office I have a DVD and DVDRW that I got on the possibility the client would need them and, if not, I would use them in a machine.  I was going to buy a hard drive this time, but my sales rep didn’t respond to my mention of those, and my attention was diverted by this when I got there.

I have my new case.  See also here, and the picture below, which looks less shiny than it really is, even with admiring fingerprints on it from the kids when I unpacked it to show it off.  Pretty, eh?  Chromatic blue.  Never saw anything like it before.  They also had a taller, non-shiny blue with clear side that was cool.  Partly I was looking at the case display because Deb’s overheats.  However, that is when using the DVD or CD drives, so we’re going to try moving those around.  I haven’t ruled out a new case, though; one with even better cooling capability.  Either that or I have to mod the existing case, and I’m not sure I’m prepared to do that.

Here’s the picture of the case, borrowed from TigerDirect, which doesn’t show off the shiny as well as some of the ones at the links but is good otherwise:

Update before I even got this posted:

I found a great deal and ordered a 550 watt power supply for the case, and more importantly, a nice drive bay cooling unit for Deb’s computer.

I also did the backup of pictures, plus 3.11 GB of e-mail data files from Outlook Express.  Much of it’s crap, but some of it’s stuff I’d really hate to lose.

* Post title dedicated to some of my friends.  You know who you are.
