Shedding Light

The trouble with outlawing incandescents, besides that it reprehensible and evil for any politician or government to believe they have the right to do so, is that they aren’t supposed to go in fully covered fixtures.

For instance, the one over our sink.  We’ve replaced about half of our bulbs with flourescents, partly for the electric bill, and partly because some of the bulbs were blowing so frequently that it was worth it to try to get them to last longer.

One of the worst is above the sink.  Last time it blew, we were going to leave the cover off and put in a flourescent regardless.  It wouldn’t light.  Neither would another one.  Hmmm… was the fixture dead?

A couple weeks later, still having not tested the new flourescents elsewhere, I finally bought a pack of 75 watt traditional bulbs.  Yay!  We can again wash dishes after dark, and the lighting of the main workspace of the counter is back to being lousy instead of ridiculous.

Weird though.  I must remember to test the ones that wouldn’t work.

In any event, does this mean if you have covered fixtures (I mean fully covered), you have to buy $30 LED bulbs for them if you’re in Australia?  Or replace them with new fixtures?  Jeez.

  1. Those $30 LED bulbs won’t do you any good in an Easy-Bake oven.
