Server Migration

I’ve received notice that the accounts on the server that includes elhide.com will be migrated to another server starting Sunday night at 9:00 Eastern time.  First, how that might matter, and then the irony.

The only thing about Blogblivion to be affected by that will be the more recent hosting of pictures.  During the move, visibility of pictures posted her in recent months could be affected.  Ditto of there is any kind of setting change that has to be changed back manually, as we have hotlink protection enabled, with our own domains as the exceptions.

Otherwise, marriedguycook.com is hosted there and could be down, but I have been bad about updating anyway.  E-mail for both that and elhide.com will be affected.  The mailing list for Carnival of the Capitalists is at elhide.com, but presumably that will transfer and I won’t need to use it during that time.

Now for the irony.  We have four hosting accounts, which eventually need to be reduced, consolidated, and partially put elsewhere as a failsafe.  And probably not with GoDaddy, where we have a fifth, extremely cheap hosting account that has gone unused mainly because of the difficulty in using it.  One account is AV (Accidental Verbosity) and also hosts Blogblivion.  Another account is XTremeComp, the old business, and also hosts a domain for my nephew and was the host of thecotc.com, which now forwards to bizosphere.com.  The original account is Elhide, which also hosts marriedguycook.com, geekpractitioners.net and I forget what else might be there offhand.  Finally, there is geekpractitioners.com, the new business hosting, which hosts welcometohelp.com, which replaced GP as what I decided to use for the business.  It also hosts bizosphere.com, the new home of Carnival of the Capitalists.  It also hosts neatlytangled.com.  There are a bunch of other domains associated with the hosting, as forwarders.

We have chronic trouble with the AV/Blogblivion hosting.  Trouble of the “almost moved to another hosting company” variety.  Trouble of the “use elhide.com for e-mail if we want it to arrive in a timely manner” variety.  Trouble of the “expecting to be migrated sometime” variety.

The server Elhide is on is old, but obviously stable.

The server XTremeComp is on is stable.  Once upon a time there were problems, but not after they migrated to a new server to resolve them.  That will be the one to which Elhide moves, which reduces the benefit of multiple hosting accounts.  That is, a server goes down and an alternate domain is available on another server, so it’s not so bad unless the whole company’s access goes down.  At least it has a stable history for an extended time now.

The server GP et al is on has been relatively fine as well.

The only one that’s been a problem for us is not the one being worked on.  A stable one is instead.  Possible the most stable of the four, as far as I can tell.

Oh well.

If you notice weirdness after 9 PM tomorrow, you’ll know why.

  1. you have problems using godaddy?  Really?
I have no issue’s and I’m not nearly as good at that kind of stuff as you are. Strange!

  2. Slightly off topic, if you’re trying to keep up with multiple blogs, how about a blog ‘empire’?  Put the links for the different blogs you write at the top of each blog.  That way Blogblivion will be easier to get to from MGC and vice versa.  Sounds like you’re already moving towards grouping like this on the hosting side.
