Sanjaya hatred overblown?
Ran across an article today that neatly outlines why *not* to be upset about Sanjaya-mania.
You know what? He doesn’t bother me in the least. He hasn’t pushed out anyone who wouldn’t have met that fate anyway. As much as I loved Gina, this wasn’t a good season for her to be on the show--not because of Sanjaya, but because it is the Season of the Huge Voices and Anything But Rock--and she never had a chance. This is not, though, despite what Simon says, a singing competition. The singing is just one part of it. The kid obviously appeals to people on some broader level. He’s freaking entertaining. And his voice may be untrained but it isn’t inherently unpleasant.
Maybe it’s just the Melinda-hype wearing on my nerves, but this isn’t American Giant Voice or American Well-Trained Voice or American Biggest Last Note. It’s American-Freaking-Idol, and the survivor that makes you go huh? is part of the game.
Think about it this way: if pure prettiness of voice is all that matters, explain Taylor Hicks. It’s the whole package, and the tweens of America like Sanjaya. So what?
