Sacrilege

Not to mention a ripoff.

Yesterday I went to Hannaford for bread and milk.  It’s been ages since we had meat from the deli, and I thought it would make a handy, fast supper for a cool near-90 fall day.  It wasn’t as bad as it looked, because they had three people.  I pulled number 64 while 59 was being served.

There was German bologna on sale for $1.99, and Sadie has loved the stuff before.  I like it, and it tastes better for that price.  So I ordered a pound.  Then I ordered half a pound each of top end ham and turkey, mainly for Deb, and a pound of cheese.

Got home and went to make sandwiches for me and the kids, using yummy onion rolls I’d also bought, and the cheap German bologna was $4.49 a pound, some kind of fit and trim shit.

I have never in my life paid that kind of money for bologna.  I wouldn’t choose to; I’d buy ham or turkey or roast beef for a bit more, if bologna were that much.

Nor do I appreciate the sacrilege of removing the flavor and giving it a funny texture.  It wouldn’t be so bad if it were good stuff, like ordering store brand ham and getting Sara Lee (ignoring for the moment that I choose to pay the price for Sara Lee because it’s just that good, so I wouldn’t be ordering store brand anyway), but to pay more than double and get total crap… ugh.  The only saving factor is it tasted okay in combination with the onion roll, mustard and cheese.  I don’t think the kids approved of it.

Very annoying.  And probably an artifact of the crowd and noise at the deli counter, because “the German bologna that’s on sale” and pointing at the sign totally translates into “the bologna substitute with no fat and minimal flavor” when ambient noise is factored in.
