Proof I Read Slower Than Deb

I started Potter at just after 5:00 AM yesterday, read for a couple hours, went back to sleep for a couple hours, and then didn’t do much but read until I was done.  That was at 3:15 or so this morning.  Perhaps less pain (which is another post) would have shaved a little time off of it, and I did keep trying to fall asleep toward the end.  I’ve done few similar marathon readings in my life, though I used to do better than spending up to three months getting through a book of modest length as I do now.  Usually I collapse into bed, grab the current book, read as little as a sentence, typically no more than a few pages, and just can’t stay awake any longer.  Some books aren’t meant to be read that way, so it’s annoying.

Deb, on the other hand, was done before midnight Saturday, having gone shopping with the kids Saturday morning and gotten home early in the afternoon, after which she started to read, with more distractions than I had.  After which she was bursting to talk about it, which, besides wanting to be able to look at spoilers online, was one of the reasons I decided to rush.  I had originally figured it to be a few days of merely somewhat more intense reading than normal.

But no, I have read and loved Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I’d have loved it more if I could remember more about the prior volumes.  In light of the above bit about my usual reading, I’d have needed to start from book one doing a reread about six months ago.  Which doesn’t bode well for re-reading The Wheel of Time before the next volume, which is supposed to close out the series in what has to be a bang to manage it in one book.  Even a long one.  Half the names of lesser but still semi-major characters mean nothing to me.

It ended almost exactly as I would have expected it to end, barring minor details, by the time I got to a couple books ago.  She threw in a lot of amusing political and social commentary, again with a decidedly libertarian bent.  That will be another post.  I was thinking of doing one post that could be considered spoiler-free except perhaps by vague implication, in which I could point out things like her poking fun at the wearing of Che shirts, poking fun at those who dislike first sale doctrine (which is highly ironic), and so forth.  Better if I can do that with warnings and be able to do it less circumspectly.
