Operation Overlord

Every time I see one of the lawn signs welcoming the new Wampanoag resort, my silly mind says “we welcome our new Wampanoag overlords.” Deb would suggest this is because I’m a freak or something.

It’s been interesting watching the signs and demonstrations, as that would seem to indicate overwhelming support and made the outcome of the demonstration why we use representative rather than Athenian democracy rather predictable.  Except in surrounding towns, where the people not invited to vote on something that affects them without offering compensation seemed to be opposed, where there were signs at all.  Poor Halifax.  Poor Bridgewater.  Poor Plympton.  Not poor Plymouth, though.  Having an 1100 room hotel minutes away from the primary tourist spot in the area, now one of the biggest shopping spots in the area, without having to deal with new hotel construction in Plymouth proper… priceless.

Update:
For benefit of Google and those stumbling on this post without context, the above refers to the Wampanoag proposal to build a resort and casino on tribal land off of route 44 in Middleboro, Massachusetts, and to give the town a large amount of money for road and other improvements and for the trouble of being the town within which the sovereign land outside their normal degree of control is contained, and to a massive town meeting held yesterday at great cost and trouble, in lieu of the selectmen representing us in the matter or having a traditional day long ballot vote, to vote on whether to accept money to make the casino and resort that would probably happen either way easier for both the tribe and the town.  Despite that it could have been three times the size if more people had been able or willing to take off work, change other plans, obtain babysitting, been worried their already decided position was in danger of losing, willing and able to be out in the conditions and craziness, it is apparently the largest town meeting in history, if you don’t count Athens.  I have mixed feelings about the project itself, but the handling of it has been an amusing spectacle to watch, be you pro or con on what are actually multiple issues involved.  Regular readers presumably knew what the above was about, but figured I’d better clarify.  Just search for Middleboro (legal name is actually Middleborough but nobody spells it that way apart from for official use) in Google News if you’re curious.
