My Hell’s Kitchen Stint

We keep joking, if it’s “joking” when you’re half serious, about my trying to get onto Hell’s Kitchen next season.  Wouldn’t that be funny?  I haven’t covered it here, but over at Married Guy Cook I recapped and commented on each episode this season, becoming the biggest hit, often number one, and generating a ton of traffic from Hell’s Kitchen searches.

We’ve joked that they could cast me as “the fat guy,” but they’d be foiled because I’m no Aaron.

We’ve joked that I could be Elsie, in the guise of the fat guy.

I’ve said, not joking, that I’m too old for that crap.  But when they cast the fat guy, they seem to join it with advanced age compared to the other contestants.  I’d be 46 when filming started, 47 when it aired, versus 48, as I recall, for Aaron.

The big thing is, I just don’t know enough.  I’d certainly not be credible as a potential winner.  I’d learn a lot in the experience, but I can’t see it being that much.  I’d be Julia without the restaurant experience.

The other big thing is, and what makes me break the fat guy casting mold the most, is in that kind of a situation, I automatically become the team leader unless I explicitly suppress what is otherwise such a compelling, natural impulse it just happens.

I’d almost need training to go in there and be the unqualified “cooks for the family but isn’t a professional so how dare he be here” contestant.  I know nothing about “fine dining.” I consider anything that costs much more than Applebee’s or perhaps Outback to be extravagant; something to do when I’m wealthy, but no more than rarely now.

Still, it’s a funny thought.  One could have fun with that 15 minutes of fame.

This has given me thoughts on a new and entirely different cooking competition show concept.  Hmmm…

  1. I always wanted to do a reality show with just “normal” everyday cooks.. along the same line you mentioned above. I don’t cook with anything exotic due to many allergy issues - I’d love to see something sorta new but not odd!
