Immigration and National ID Stub
I start posts, composing in w.bloggar, then end up with them sitting for days or weeks until I either finish them, discard them, or post what I have ruefully. This is what I was writing about the immigration bill that was such a mess. It would presumably have gone on at some length, and probably have been titled or made reference to “your papers please.” Here’s as far as I got:
I’ve only seen it at one blog and in one article so far, but there is one simple reason not to support the current immigration bill: National employment verifications and the stealth (if you can call trampling heavily through freedom’s underbrush stealthy) implications toward national ID.
Creating a national ID card system in response to illegal immigration would be like making air travel barely tolerable in post-barn door response to a one-off terrorist event (and disarming and cowing people so they are less likely to fight back effectively in in response to such an even on the way off chance it does happen again). It would be like strong-arming the states into intrusive and uniform driver’s licenses as mandatory IDs in hysterical response to security concerns. Oh wait…
I’m of the libertarian the more the merrier school of immigration.
If you’re going to keep people out, then keep people out. Quit with the wink and nod approach.
They’re reviving the damned thing, you know. So this is more relevant than it seems.
But can you write about it without the proper papers, comrade?
