Hot Wheels
Yesterday the kids (with a bit of help...) discovered the joy of launching their collection of little Matchbox, Tonka and, mostly, Hot Wheels cars down a proper ramp. The ramp? It is a piece of metal, perhaps four feet long, that in real life is the front of a section of baseboard heater they can’t bring themselves to leave in place. I’ve tried the ramp thing before, but never found something so effective.
That led me to wonder whether they still make track for Hot Wheels. My brother had mass quantities of the classic orange strips of track, which my sister delighted in using to smack him when called for, or perhaps even when not.
In my day, it was Matchbox cars, with Hot Wheels being a new thing sometime in my youth (so far as I knew, anyway), or the cheap, no-name die cast cars. For a wonder, the things have only gotten less expensive, relatively speaking. I pined for Matchboxes in the 5&10 for 50¢ each in 1970. In 2007 I can get cooler, high quality Hot Wheels at Wal-Mart for 97¢ each. Even in walking distance they’re $1.29. I just adored those things and only ever had a few. The girls already own more than I ever did, at least if you count only the name brand ones.
My older brother had an electric race track with motorized cars that were the size of Hot Wheels, which was awesome when it worked. I was soooo jealous.
My younger brother was at the right age for the full on Hot Wheels craze, when they came out with the track, and the loops, and saturated the Saturday airwaves with ads. I can’t remember the last time I saw and ad or heard of their being gear like that for Hot Wheels.
Perhaps I can find some by the time their rowdy little brother is old enough to play with the cars too. Preferably sooner, so we can spare the poor baseboard heater.
They don’t sell the track like they use to, but they do sell sets. Mostly they are like little track set ups with a launcher or a motor that keeps the cars going around in a circuit. Ryun was “given” all my track without my being asked at some point so I’m not sure what happened to it from there.
If you check in Wal Mart next time your there you will see what I mean.Posted by wayne on 04/14 at 11:03 AM from ohioTry thrift stores or yard sales, too. You might be able to get a PILE of track for CHEAP.

All you had to do was tell Dad or I and you would have had them for sure. I’m the one who did all the birthday/Christmas shopping and I tried very hard to listen when you kids spoke about what you wanted. Never heard you say that one.Wayne was very vocal about what he wanted so therefore he got it. Dad did not remember you ever asking or remember seeing you playing with that sort of thing.
