Happy Birthday

To my old friend Tom, whom I have known since 1975, and who has lately been having a hard to watch, to all appearances losing, battle with alcoholism and the cumulative fallout from many years of it.  I hope 46 is a lot better than 45 was.  He’d be able to relate to this guy, and indeed I encouraged him to blog at one point for the same reasons Rob started blogging.  I just fear he’ll come to relate too well.

1. I may be one of the few people who regularly read your blog who knows “your old friend Tom”.  Perhaps knew of would have been a more appropriate way to word it since I have had no contact with him in many, many, many years.  A touch of irony in reading your entry that I’m sure you will appreciate—a colleague of mine was heading on a business trip and was telling me that Stevie Nicks was performing a concert at the hotel/casino he was staying at.  Of course Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac will forever be linked in my mind to the “good old days” hanging around with Mike, Tom, etc., so I naturally was thinking about those times just earlier today.  And then I read this.  :-(
