Experimental Saturday

Today I made my first attempt at making pita pocket bread, which I will write about soon at the food blog, of course.  I’ll want to make changes when I try again, but basically it is quite good, even if the pocket-ness isn’t as pronounced as could be.  My next attempt will probably wait until after the hot spell that’s supposed to reign the next couple weeks.  Even at not-too-hot today a 550 degree oven didn’t have to run long to overwhelm the kitchen.

Along with that, I am working on hummus, for which the beans ought to be ready any time now.  Since we have no crackers and toasted pita bread is traditional, that actually drove the pita experiment, rather than vice-versa.  It sounds like hummus is highly flexible, so I should produce something edible if not “traditional.” I’ll report on that at the food blog too.  There is enough pita bread that there should still be some left when the hummus is ready…

Update:

The hummus came out fine.  I think it could be better and experimentation is in order.  Deb loves it.  The amusing thing, though… both of the girls hate it.  They never react like that to anything.  It’s probably going to be better cold and with stuff like pita bread, but man it was funny the sound effects when Sadie spit out her taste.

  1. Heh.  I hated it as a kid, too.  It’s an acquired taste.
