Details, Details
I’m here working on the web site, having just remembered that I can help my focus by firing up iTunes and putting on the headset. I’m working on what is currently an “about” page, and extending it into elaborating on experience, which means my series of experience posts will now come in handy.
As I do this, I find myself distracted by the fact that I need a computer with Vista.
It may not be going over the way Microsoft would like. It may be advisable to wait until the first full service pack, or better, the next release of Windows, since Vista is effectively a 1.0 version. It may be possible for me to do a certain amount to help people, even if I don’t have it myself. But to be really effective, I should have laid hands on it, and extensively so.
I have immediate or fairly ready access to machines with Windows XP Pro and Home, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows NT 4, DOS, and could easily make one available with Windows Me. I’ve used Windows 2003 Server, full and SBS. I’ve used Windows 2000 Server. Not likely to need those handy anyway. Vista, though… and damn, I need to finish building myself a primary machine, and would prefer not to pollute it, but I may have to. Perhaps dual boot with Ubuntu.
Seriously, that’s probably what I’ll end up doing. I just have to shop and order motherboard, CPU, RAM, Vista itself, and any odds and ends I may need. It kind of puts a dent in the “shoestring.” So sad.
