Camera Recommendations?

To take the dinosaur picture and one other that came out usable, I snapped seventeen pictures.  Most of them are basically black because of the flash refusing to go off.  A couple of them are almost pure white because the flash fired wrong.

This is what the camera has become like, though the ratio here was even worse than usual due to the lighting and nature of the picture I was trying to take.

So when I get paid, which can’t happen too soon because it’s been since the middle of December, a camera is way up there in priority.  Not too expensive, though, and not an HP again.  I love HP printers, though our home one may well be a Kodak when the time comes.  I would never buy an HP computer, and we’re done with HP cameras.

Any recommendations?  The budget is around $200 or below, plus the cost of a decent capacity memory card, which really means no more than $300 tops for the actually cash spent to walk out of the store with a camera.

It doesn’t have to be fancy, have the highest possible megapixels, etc.  It should be able to do video, which is pretty standard now, with sound, which I think is also pretty standard.  Mostly we’re about photos, but there’s no way we’re going to have a video camera any time soon, and the small videos we can take, modest quality or not, are precious.

If we think of any specs I’m forgetting, Deb or I will add to the post or put it in the comments.  In the meantime, work’s gone crazy(er) so I have to move.

  1. I Still stand with my Kodak. Mine cost $250 a couple years ago. It takes great pictures and i’ve had no issue’s with it.  Get one that comes with a battery and charger like mine did.  I have a cheep kodak for work and it works fine but it eats through even the expensive digital camera batterys way to fast. It does take decent pictures though.  The only other kind of Digital camera I have use is HP and I loathed it.  I always had to take 3 or 4 of each shot I took to make sure I got one good one.  I hear sony’s are good too.  Just my two cents.

  2. I’ve had wonderful experience with my Sony.  My HP, eh not so much.  I get better pics from my CELL PHONE than that thing.

I’ve also heard VERY good things about the Canons and Nikons.

    I’d probably get another Sony.

  3. Look at the Canon cameras.  They have some excellent products in all price ranges; and, if you check some of the places like Helix or camera discounters, you can find some really good deals.  I used to be a member of Nikon Professional Services, but for digital am sold on Canon.

  4. Don’t ask me, I still use film (although I’ve been swearing for years that we will get a digital camera “this year"). One of these days maybe - sigh!

  5. I would say check out Canon camera’s.  Esther and I love ours and like someone else said they have all sorts of different price points so you can get one with the functions you want and you just have to slide the megapixle scale to find the right price.

  6. Hey Marshall --- I highly recommend the Kodak EasyShare C433.  It has 6.1 MP, a 3X optical zoom lens, video with audio, picture enhancing features, and extra internal memory.  I purchased this camera recently, and it has proved to be a wonderful investment.

I also have Kodak EasyShare software on my computer, which makes uploading both pictures and videos on my laptop.  The edit functions have also proved to be quite a help as well.  This camera goes for about $120.00 - which is a great value for 6MP.  Good luck!
