Batteries

They would be a surprisingly good Christmas present in our house!

We have a mess of AA and AAA ones in a box, plus the balance of the ten at a time lithium camera batteries we have to buy periodically, and a stray 9 volt.  However, we had run out of C and D cells, to the point where I’d robbed the Mag of its three D cells to keep the baby swing going.  It takes four D cells and eats them rapidly.  The old swing only needed a couple changes of batteries the whole time we used it for Sadie.  The baby gym needed C batteries, as did a new toy of Henry’s.

After $23 total for a 12-pack each of C and D, there are just five left of each size.  I could probably replenish a couple more flashlights and wipe out the latter.  Ouch.

So, yeah, batteries would make a surprisingly good generic gift.

  1. I am always running out of batteries, mainly in AA and AAA.  I prefer Duracell, but sometimes use Energizers.  Anyhow, these things are expensive, even if you buy in bulk at Sam’s Club.  I’ve considered rechargeables, but have had trouble in the past with storage because they tend to discharge quickly.

Digging around online I came across BatteryJunction.com.  They sell in bulk.  I ordered 60 AA Duracells for $0.33 each.  Even when you add in shipping, it seems to come out less than anything I can find in the store (at least for the name brands that I prefer; I checked their prices and while they show 12 C’s + 12 D’s for $21.00, shipping brings it to $31, so I suppose it may not work as well for you; on the flipside, though, your shipping may be less, as I think they are in the New York area).

I’m re-examining rechargeables, though, at least for AA’s because of the new style of “Low Self-Discharge” precharged cells (like these).
