Attack of the Tin Whiskers

Chan has been talking about the lead-free solder problem for a long time.  I may have even first heard of it from him in person, but I don’t remember.

It’s ridiculous.  Lead alloyed with tin in solder doesn’t have an environmental problem.  This is one of those foolish political unintended consequences, but because it’s been done and not promptly undone, and because it’s a large enough market where the rules have been applied - the EU did this bullshit move, not the US - we will pay the price and there’s not likely to be a turnaround.  As Ars Technica says, even exempt items may end up lead-free, due to relative size of demand.

  1. Not to mention that broken electronics will in turn lead to millions of class action lawsuits against electronics manufacturers, and ultimately less new electronic goodness. The EU is stupid - damned Europeans.
