Apathy
It’s a terrible thing.
Today I need to go try to pick the Christmas cards up again. They weren’t ready yesterday, either. The girl who messed up the works also wasted so much paper - something about threading it through the machine backward - that they ran out. When Deb stopped, they had someone on the way to Boston to get more, and they expected the backlog to be ready, yes, today.
It’s already too late to buy stamps today, but that can happen Monday after the cards are ready to go.
I need to work this weekend. Pretty much as many hours as I could ever want to put in, I can put in, and zero is not an option. The big thing is needing to generate the database structure and some sample data from the existing document management system, which uses SQL Server 6.5, to send to the company that makes the case management system they’re planning to purchase. The idea is for the programmers there to see if they can create a migration utility, so the old data can be brought into the new program. Otherwise they’ll basically have to run the old software side-by-side for several years, at least, for access to the old data, and manually move any current cases to the new software. Not optimal.
If I had the right tools on one of the newer servers, I could remote in and do this, but really I’m better off doing it from the office. While at it, I might as well get some other things done.
I’m not quite so apathetic about shopping. I need to get Sadie a bed. I could do some Christmas shopping if I’m willing to brave the weekend. I need to work on billing. Normally I stay way behind, which being self-employed and so reliant on one big client is as close as I get to unemployment insurance. However, they have requested I catch up through at least November. November will be the biggest month there has ever been in seven years and eleven months, following unusually large months September and October. The previous biggest included a week in which we spent 90 hours dealing with the consequences of a virus. That was in 2001 or 2002, and it took bringing in a third party IT services firm to get them to deploy site antivirus software, at a cost a fraction of that 90 hours, but one they always perceived as too costly or superfluous. Frustrating.
Anyway, I’d rather hang out all day; blog, play with the kids, maybe even do some baking or cleaning or whatever, like the filing project I did spontaneously the other day.
The whole week will be hectic, too. Monday or Tuesday the van will get registered. Yeah, the one I haven’t photographed yet because I keep remembering it after dark. That’ll be good, as Deb will have wheels.
Blah. At least the back feels better. It’s in the background, making threatening noises, but mostly not hurting. Yay.
