Another Kid Gift Idea

Software.  Basic, simple fun/educational software.

So far, Sadie has an AMD 400 running Windows 98.  Valerie has a P200 running Windows 95.  I’d not worry about the older machine, as they can share of Val’s can be swapped for better.  However, neither will be likely to have newer than a P3 450 any time soon.  They also lack sound, but that’s on my mental to do list to fix, at least for Sadie’s.  Oddly, I think of that as almost a recreational diversion, trying old sound cards and finding drivers to make it work.  They’d likely be sharing anyway.  It’s not out of the question for them to use software on one of our machines, if it has modern requirements.  However, that would have to be for limited times, rather than having free reign.

Sadie has just started having control over the mouse and understanding that different keys do different things and can be pressed intentionally as such.  Not that they use them much.  They’ve been downright neglected.

What’s funny is when I sat down with Sadie and did a lesson in shapes and the alphabet, she suggested typing letters instead of writing them.  Speaking of which, I think I’m going to start working her on a different letter each day.  Learning to draw A is an accomplishment.  Getting a look at the whole alphabet being written is a distraction.  Speaking of the alphabet, Sadie will say “LMNOP” gleefully to complete what follows any given part of the alphabet you recite.  Me: “ABCD.” Sadie: “LMNOP!” Very cute.
