Amazonian Stupidity
So I went to preorder the new Harry Potter last night, since I’m in possession of 20 bucks and a deep, deep need not to be spoiled before I can read the damned thing, and I decided to look at the specifics on the shipping deal that has it arriving on the release date.
Unfortunately, I can’t order it from them. And I’m just a little peeved about it.
See, here’s the thing: in order to get all 1 point however many million copies they’ve presold into people’s hands on the 21st, they’re using a variety of carriers, including UPS. And they state that although no signature is required, they won’t be held responsible if the carrier refuses to leave the package because nobody is home to accept it. And I know from experience that UPS absolutely will not leave anything here, because they’ve required a signature from me when I’ve specifically requested *not* to have to sign for a thing so that I wouldn’t have to stay home all day and wait for their sorry asses to deliver. And we’re *not* going to be home the whole day that day...it’s a Saturday in July. We have things to do. That’s part of the whole motivation behind ordering the damned thing. One less stop to make, one less thing to worry about.
I’m sure they don’t care, since they must be losing money on every copy, but I care, because I like spending money there. And I’m used to them being there to make my life easier, not harder. And maybe the blame more properly falls on UPS for being a bunch of overly-conscientious pricks, but you know what? If the person you’re depending on to deliver your business has policies that make it hard for your customers to use you, then that’s *your* fault. Also, I doubt all the disclaimers would be there if they weren’t offering refunds if you don’t get the thing on that day, which really is their fault.
I love it when businesses outsmart themselves and drive people off trying to draw them in. It suits my sense of something-or-other.
Anyhow, poo on you , Amazon. I’ll buy the damned thing somewhere else.
My wee wifey stopped dealing with a couple of mail-order houses which insisted on shipping UPS to us before I pointed out that we could specify “Hold for pickup at Elm Grove depot” as the ship-to address.

I do not understand this reasoning. Plz xplayn. Kthx.
