Accidental Imposter
So back in early 2004 we combined The Accidental Jedi and Jay Solo’s Verbosity to create a blog with an utterly unique name: Accidental Verbosity.
It seemed like there followed an explosion of other blogs named Accidental [fill in the blank], which sometimes amused and other times bothered me, but at least we were safely unique. How would anyone conceivably come up with the same name. Not like the logical construct and sometimes alleged generic term ”poliblog”, which Steven Taylor’s long-established, widely known, implicitly service-marked as a distinct brand PoliBlog has to work so hard to protect.
In any event, anyone naming a blog is going to Google the name to learn its existing usage before naming another blog the same thing. It’s logical. It’s polite. It not only keeps you from stepping on toes, but also tells you how much of a struggle it might be to be found in your own right. I would always tell people Google Accidental Verbosity as a quick way to find us. Accidental Jay also works. Ditto for accidental Deb.
If I wanted to name a blog Accidental Verbosity and I got those results, I’d immediately change names, if only figuring I’d want to be more unique in search results. Though page two isn’t bad.
So I discovered there’s an imposter Accidental Verbosity that was started last February.
Of course, since then we’ve turned Accidental Verbosity archival and moved our main blogging to Blogblivion (which, yes, we Googled before using as a blog name, apart from the “always a point in your favor if there’s any question” obtaining of the domain name to match), and it’s not like Accidental Verbosity is commercial, so I’m not convinced I should be annoyed so much as bemused. It also helps that she seems decent and well-written, and is in neuroscience, and is (newly) local. Plus in the URL she more accurately named it ”Lisa’s Accidental Verbosity.”
What do you think? I think I’ll add Lisa’s birthday to my calendar of blogger birthdays and keep checking out her blog periodically.
Well, you aren’t really using the name any more, so maybe you can cut her some slack.
I am annoyed at the guy who started another Bogieblog (I’ve had mine since way before he started his - about 3 years). I’ll bet he’s annoyed because mine still comes out on top in a Google search - ha!
