A Post of Some Kind
I could have sworn I had something to post, but I can’t think of what it was, and I’m still considering my list of 8 things. I thought of two or three good items for it yesterday. Couldn’t tell you what those were, now, since I didn’t write them down, but they gave me hope at coming up with a good list.
Since I have nothing better, I’ll note that my parts are on target to arrive Saturday and Vista is on target to arrive Monday. It would be unsurprising to see them sooner.
I got curious and checked the same stuff at Newegg. The net result appears to be that I saved a bit. The only thing I could have gotten for less was the memory, at $3.51 per GB less for the best buy. I didn’t find the same motherboard in anything up through several dollars more than mine. My CPU was $12 lower than the same CPU retail boxed with heat sink and fan, so with the better than stock heat sink and fan it cost me $3-odd more. I was pleased to see that Vista was the same at Newegg, and it’s clearly a place to look for software. The prices did seem reasonable for other hardware generally, if not automatically the lowest out there, but I thought they were oddly hard to navigate in places.
Anyway, time to try to get some work done. Slicing up and packaging what I offer and what I support is harder than I might have expected. That and there’s still the whole pricing thing, which I think I have a handle on. There will be an absolute hourly rate for freeform whatever. There will be package prices for specific things, balanced between being a value price for the customer and not a quagmire for me. There will be prepaid plans that get discounted because they are prepaid, and discounted more for larger volumes.
Listing the apps I’d currently be willing and able to support explicitly, versus on a “best effort basis,” makes me wish to cover more. I think I’ll want to try to include, if not right at the outset, at least Ununtu Linux, and at least the Open Office suite of apps, explicitly in addition to Windows and the Microsoft Office suite of apps and various odds and ends.
Anyway…
