Jay: Sadie’s Night Out

Sadie went to dinner with friends with me last night.  Rather than juggling transportation and keeping both girls up late, just the two of us went, foiling Yan’s everyone’s plans to see the baby.

There are other pictures to be posted sometime soon - henry will get his due! - but for now this is Sadie last night, with her friend Dale in some of them, and Dale’s mother doing Sadie’s hair in one of them.  Dale wanted us to stay over when it was time to go, which ended up being about 10:30.  He insisted on seeing everyone out to their cars in the rain, and tried to walk out with Sadie, holding an umbrella over both of them, but she ran ahead.

She is so good!  Not perfect, but about as good as anyone could expect of a three year old.  They get along so well, we should get them together more often.  Last time was May, and the last one-on-one (versus tons of kids at a birthday party) was February, here.

Jay: The Kidses

Henry in the famous “yellows” that all the kids wore, featured on Sadie in some of the cutest pictures ever.

Valerie struggling to take a shirt off.  When I typed the name of the picture, shirthead, I couldn’t help thinking of Acidman and his post about stupid names parents give their kids, featuring the time he encountered someone named Shithead.  That’s “shuh-THEED” or “shih-THEED” doncha know.  So I was thinking “sher-THEED” when I typed shirt head run together.

Sadie taking a picture of herself.  Not the clearest shot ever, but so cute.

Jay: Patty Hearst

We were just talking about Halloween a while ago, and the fact that Sadie will presumably want to partake and there is no costume on hand for her.  She doesn’t seem particularly aware now, but she’ll probably see it on TV, and she did trick-or-treat sans costume along with the daycare kids at the former big client.  Heck, it took months to consume the candy so garnered.

I’d have thought I’d be all excited about taking her around, but I find myself weirdly apathetic.  At her age, mainly I’d expect to drive around to various relatives and not do much else.  They’re a little far flung for that, but it could work, going to my grandmother’s, brother’s, sister’s, and then brother’s, then home and to the neighbors.  Once I get to my grandmother’s, each of the other places is within several minutes, until the long trip home.  Of course, if Sadie goes, Valerie will want to go, which makes things even weirder and if still car issues, keeps us to the neighborhood.  Valerie actually may have a costume or two in her size.

Anyway, I pointed out that Sadie could wear her red hat and whatever else and go as Patty Hearst.  She always reminds me of Patty Hearst when she wears that hat, cocked at an angle.

Or, I suggested, we could find an old white sheet, cut eye holes and she could go as a ghost.  I did that a couple times when I was a kid.  I was never big into costumes.  Whatever I might have done when younger, as I got older it was pretty much always a hobo type of getup, or no costume at all.

Perhaps I should outsource Halloween to my older brother.  He just reveled in it with his kids, probably even more than he did when he was young.

I dunno.  Maybe I’m strange.  At least Christmas excites me and I care about making the most of it with the kids, even in among feeling morose about the prospect of it more generally.

Update:

This is the best picture I could find rapidly that might give an idea both what I mean by the red hat, of which no pics seem to have been posted before, and of the way she looks wearing it.

Jay: Henry

He is the most opinionated about music that I can remember any of the kids being at that age.  Of course, he is also bored easily enough that I have found resorting to singing or humming to him is like magic for keeping him engaged and relatively happy.  Also holding extended conversations.  He smiles or makes other expressions in responses, and sometimes talks back or tries to sing too with coo-like ahh and ooh sounds.

What’s funny is when he seems to have opinions on what you say, or reacts appropriately, like with a smile, to something that an adult might find funny.

This is one of the 308 pictures just downloaded off the camera, so there should be more soon, but Valerie stole the show in this batch.
