Jay: Sadie Gets All Of ‘Em Cut
It had gotten to the point of bothering her, so she eagerly accepted a haircut. It came out fantastic.
Jay: She’ll Eat Anything
The blue is from Sadie’s Play-Doh. More commonly Valerie samples crayons. It’s rather disturbing.

Jay: Dale and Sadie
This is Sadie and her friend Dale on Sunday, when we somehow managed to have nine adults and three kids for dinner without bursting the place at its seams. You can see that Sadie wasn’t perfectly neat eating her piece of ice cream cake.

Jay: Val’s Birthday at Grandma’s
Since her birthday was a week ago (and these pics were the Sunday before that), I thought it was about time I posted Valerie’s birthday pictures, or started to anyway.
These are them at my grandmother’s house for dinner on the 18th, plus a picture of my mother with Valerie’s cake we had there.

Jay: In Which Valerie Has a Birthday
Valerie is a year old today! How time flies. Here are some pictures from her first couple months, starting with the ones in the announcement post, followed by some from the past several weeks. Oh right, I meant to use “then and now” in the title or intro to this posts, since that describes and inspired the set of pictures…
That last one is courtesy of Sharon, who takes some amazing pictures.
We have a cake for tonight, in addition to the cake she had Sunday. Come to think of it, there may be pictures of that, still on the old camera. I should remember to download those. Speaking of which, we had the first gotchas with the new camera. First, I couldn’t install the software on my computer. Then the batteries that came with it died after the first few dozen pictures. We can use Deb’s computer for the downloads, and we have tons of batteries on hand, so they aren’t big problems. But I digress, and this has reminded me of two other posts I need to write…
Happy birthday, Vertical Girl! Always remember: Gravity exists.

Jay: Pictures from the New Camera
These are all recent pictures taken with the new camera, skipping over some other good ones preceding them slightly, just because.
That last one is a dragon each of the kids got, plus a triceratops Sadie had to get as well, because she had to have two so they could kiss each other. That and it seems to be her favorite kind of dinosaur; she has three of that variety. To our surprise, on a subsequent day she was holding the dragon by its wings, flapping them, and referring to the wings by name. No idea where she learned “wing” or made such a clear connection between them and the dragon flying. Which is just one more example of Deb’s adage about babies and beyond: “They’re little, not stupid.”

Jay: New Camera
Today we did the obligatory dinner at my grandmother’s, where there was birthday cake for Valerie, who will be one Wednesday (and my blogging will be four years old in a week, next Sunday, so I’ll have to remember that when the time comes). It was one of those crazy times when even though it had been but a few weeks since the last visit, the kids aged dramatically in that period. Heck, Sadie has officially insisted on no more diapers, and is relatively serious about potty training. Valerie has graduated out of the highchair and now has a regular chair at the table, where she is oddly neater, and the main problem is convincing her not to climb onto the table. Oh, and Valerie’s latest new word today was “ketchup.” They’re definitely my kids.
Anyway, after that we continued our explosive decompression of grocery and sundry restocking. In the morning Deb went to Wal-Mart and Hannaford. After dinner we all went to BJ’s. We checked out the camera display, not far from the entrance, were blown away, and after thinking on it while filling the cart, went back and went through with it.
We bought a Kodak EasyShare C533 5 megapixel camera for $99.99, and a 1 GB SD card for $29.99, which is amazing. Bear in mind that the current card is 64 MB, only double the new camera’s internal memory. Picture unloaded from the cameras in 2005 and 2006, and copies modified to go online, take a total of 16 GB of hard drive space. The old SD card being available allows one of the old cameras to remain a viable spare.
I’ve only taken a few pictures, but you can see on the camera’s LCD how much sharper they look. So far so good. We’ve heard such good things about the Kodaks that it wasn’t just a matter of it being the lowest price camera there.
In the meantime, I have a mess of good pics I downloaded from the old camera before we left today, so some of those might get posted, and there are several more I took at my grandmother’s. The kids were wearing some nice outfits they got for Christmas, for the first time, and we wanted some pictures before they trashed them with food. Which they would up not really doing. I can’t believe how good they are to take places.
When I get some pics off the new camera, I’ll post and make special note of them.

Jay: Eh… Close Enough
There was something I wanted to take care of before posting this, but you know, it’s close enough, and there are a lot of people out there who will be all excited by the news. In a good way, that is.
This is from Tuesday, one day short of thirteen weeks. No, we don’t know what it is yet. There was no telling; that’ll be maybe the 18 week ultrasound. The purpose of this one was for genetic screening, in conjunction with a blood test. The squirt is quite possibly more mobile than the others were, so doing the measurement was easier said than done, but everything looks good and normal from that perspective.
About the FAQ answers…
Yes, we know how this happens. Yes, we are stopping after this. Yes, we wanted a third. No, we weren’t pointedly trying again just to get a boy. Yes, we’d be thrilled with another girl (plus we can make them share a room longer), as well as happy with a boy. Yes, everyone has either guessed or extrapolated from the differences in the pregnancy that it’s a boy, but that doesn’t mean anything.
If I didn’t have these pictures burning a hole in my drive, I’d probably wait a few more weeks just for maximum being sure everything is going great, but hey, close enough there, too. So yay, big happy news.

Jay: Budding Artist
Sadie utterly astonished us by drawing a dinosaur yesterday. It’s unmistakable what she intended, and she was pleased that we recognized it. But hello, she’s two. Should this even be possible?
Possible or not, this particular piece of paper is now hanging on the fridge for posterity.

Jay: When Sadie Gets Loose With a Pen…
She explores the paper-like properties of skin.
This took place in a matter of minutes, during which they were not in the same room with me and being very quiet. Deb was at the doctor. I took pictures so she could see.
You can see by Val’s face what kind of reaction Sadie got from me when I discovered this. Sadie looked even sadder. The facecloth and a couple spots in the tub got stained blue. Sadie had residual marks for days, but I got them so clean that Deb didn’t have a clear idea just how bad it was before seeing the pictures.
Sadie loves drawing in pen, even more than crayon, but obviously it requires supervision. She has her own pen, from when she accompanied me to the insurance agency, but it lives on top of the refrigerator now.
