Jay: Another Candidate Comparison Quiz
Via Dean, here is another select a candidate tool. What’s intriguing is that McCain and Giuliani again are at the top, while Kucinich is again at the bottom. In between, they seem more tightly clustered. Numerically they are:
John McCain 48
Rudy Giuliani 39
Joe Biden! 38
Jim Gilmore 31 (Who?)
Mitt Romney 30
Fred Thompson 29
Duncan Hunter 29
Ron Paul 28
Sam Brownback 26
Tom Tancredo 26
Barack Obama 23
Hillary Clinton 23
Bill Richardson 23
Mike Huckabee 22
Mike Gravel 20
Chris Dodd 20
John Edwards 18
Dennis Kucinich 15
Even as well phrased as the options are overall, there are still weaknesses to the quiz. It’s almost enough to make me want to do my own.
For instance, my two lists for McCain are:
Agree
Immigration
Taxes
Health Care
Social Security
Line-Item Veto
Energy
Marriage
Death Penalty
Disagree
Iraq
Stem-Cell Research
Abortion
My two lists for Romney are:
Agree
Taxes
Stem-Cell Research
Health Care
Abortion
Line-Item Veto
Death Penalty
Disagree
Iraq
Immigration
Social Security
Energy
Marriage
The trouble is, I decided to click yes on expanded federal funding of stem cell research, with low weight, as an expression of support for stem cell research generally. In reality, there should not now nor ever have been or be in the future federal spending on stem cell research. But the feds shouldn’t prevent or hinder it either, and since our society as it exists does indeed use federal funding for such things, that funding should be no more restricted than private. Saying no on that puts me in religious right whacko territory, except my reasoning would be other. Thus I would rather be identified in the yes column, but not with the also whacko federally fund (and control!) every kind of research (and everything!) crowd.
I came out agreeing with Romney on health care, because I said no to nationalized health care. The trouble is, Romney wants something worse; something that is the first government imposition in my life that has made me seriously consider leaving Massachusetts, it’s that evil.
These tests are entertaining, even informative, but let it never be said they aren’t relatively simplistic. And now, really, I need to get out of here…

Jay: Picking Your Nose Feels Less Dirty
Via Jen, Pick Your Candidate gave me interesting results. I did’t get as high a match as she did with Romney at 59. In fact, five came out higher for her than any did for me.
I did, however, get a scary top result, because the test doesn’t adjust for the “this man is an evil fascist and I would never dream of supporting him” factor that outwheighs any superficial appearance of agreement on the issues. Since my number one on the test, McCain, is not deserving of office, the implication is that my candidate would be Giuliani, who is perhaps almost as dictatorial in nature as McCain. Sigh…
My results:
McCain 35
Giuliani 33
Thompson 21
Tancredo 15
Hunter 14
Cox 11 (Who??)
Paul 11 (Which speaks to the spin of the question set.)
Brownback 4
Huckabee 2
Romney 0
Richardson -3
Gravel -5
Obama -7
Dodd -11
Edwards -12
Clinton -15
Kucinich -19
Fascinating.

Hey comment spammers, fuck off.
The rest of you, disregard this post. I am attempting to mess with the results the manual comment spammers from Ukraine, Russia, or wherever they may lurk, get by searching Google the title of this post in quotes for this domain only. That is why I am marking this post as being in every available category, because then every category should come up as a link in Google that is not a distinct individual post page with comment entry available.

The bit about the computer references hit waaaay too close to home, given the ten boxes of computer books, as much programming references as anything, I just put in storage, and the four boxes only marginally less obsolete or obscure I have coming home. Unless I decide to throw them in storage, if there’s room.

Jay: “Civics” Quiz
I got 90% on this quiz; 54 right out of 60. Most of what I got wrong was taking a stab between two likely choices, perhaps getting game play wrong. That’s always an element in multiple choice, after all. Sometimes a trick question is not a trick question after all.
Some are brainless. Some are tough. Most have one or two obvious answers and the rest can be dismissed out of hand, often with great amusement. Some might have you saying “this is civics?”
I got number 36 wrong, and that was a pure guess between the answer that was correct but struck me as as odd, except for making sense in a Westphalian sort of way, and the answer I chose, which was the expected bleeding heart answer.
Anyway, intriguing stuff.

You Are a Haunted House |
![]() You are a deeply complicated and sometimes deeply disturbed person. You can’t help but be attracted to the dark side of life - even when it’s pretty gruesome. In relationships, you are honest and real. So real that it’s definitely a little scary. You don’t fake it or play along just to get along. And people either respect this… or deeply resent it Your life is thoughtful, deep, and even philosophical at times. You see the world as it is. You don’t sugar coat anything. Facing and fighting your fears is important to you. You believe that too much of life is whitewashed. You’re not too morbid… you just believe that you can’t enjoy life without exorcising a few demons first! At your best, you are brave, intense, and fearless. Not only do you face the abyss head on - you challenge your friends to do the same. At your worst, you are depressed and morose. If you’re not careful, your thoughts take over your mind… and they aren’t pretty! |
